Poll: 88% disagree with the Sultan ~ malaysiakini

From the various

protests and huge outcry over what many have called an undemocratic ousting of a legitimate state government, it would be safe to assume that a majority of Malaysians are unhappy over what has been going on in Perak.

dr zambry abdul kadir new perak cm 110209 04A survey conducted by Malaysiakini saw an overwhelming majority of readers disagreeing with Sultan Azlan Shah's decision in the transfer of power in the silver state.

A total of 34,617 out of 39,411 readers, or 87.8 percent said they were against the sultan's decision in the four-day survey which ended yesterday.

Last Thursday, the sultan rejected the Pakatan Rakyat state government's request to dissolve the state assembly in view of defections by several of its state representatives.

The sultan, a former lord president, also asked Mohd Nizar Jamaluddin to resign as menteri besar, which the latter refused.

However, 3,862 (9.8 percent) survey respondents said they agreed with the sultan's decision while 932 readers (2.4 percent) answered "Don't know".

We Want Snap Election in Perak!

An overwhelming majority of
MCPX
Malaysiakini
readers want a snap poll to resolve the political impasse in Perak.

With two-way defections affecting both Pakatan Rakyat and the Barisan Nasional opposition in the state, 94% of those participating in Malaysiakini's one-day online survey (see chart below) want either by-elections in the purportedly vacant seats held by two defectors or a state-wide election.

jamaluddin mat radzi and osman jailu perak pkrJust over half of the 2,308 respondents (51%) have opted for by-elections in the two state seats - Behrang and Changkat Jering - held by PKR defectors, Jamaluddin Mat Radzi and Osman Jailu respectively.

Another 41% want the dissolution of the Perak assembly so that a state election can be called.

Only 4.2% said that BN should be allowed to form the state government if they have managed to gather sufficient defections.

MB has option to dissolve assembly

With Pakatan's 32 seats against BN's 27, the opposition needs at least three defections before it can go to the Perak sultan to claim the right to form government.

The Election Commission today has rejected by-elections for the two state seats. It ruled that both Jamaluddin and Osman are still state assemblypersons.

EC chief Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said that their denial letters received yesterday indicated their wish not to quit their seats, despite resignation letters brandished by PKR which were signed earlier by the duo.

With only one-seat majority, Menteri Besar Mohamad Nizar Jamaluddin may exercise his option of calling a snap election to resolve the political instability.

Menteri Besar Perak Perlu Mendidik EXCO Sivanesan Supaya Lebih Profesional!

Najib says no more defections to Pakatan

No more defections to Pakatan Rakyat!

This was the bold pronouncement made by Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today following the decision by Umno's Bota state representative to join Pakatan yesterday.

"These are all rumours... I don't think so," said Najib.

perak bota adun crossover pkr 250109 nasarudin hashimYesterday Bota assemblyperson Nasaruddin Hashim (photo) left Umno to join Pakatan in Perak, prompting speculation that others might also follow suit.

According to a Bernama report, Najib today described Nasaruddin's action as unexpected.

The incoming Umno president said that he hoped Nasaruddin could think carefully his decision to join PKR, a Pakatan Rakyat component member.

He added he was made to understand that Nasaruddin's action was due to several factors. He did not elaborate.

He was talking to reporters after attending the MCA's Chinese New Year open house in Kuala Lumpur.

Not right to abandon party

"We heard about this two days ago but it is still a shock," he said.

Najib said Umno and BN elected representatives should understand that the party had done a lot of good deeds to the people and the country.

"It is not right to abandon the party because of personal problems or dissatisfactions at a time when the party needs our support," he said.

With Nasaruddin's defection, the Perak Pakatan Rakyat government now has 32 seats compared to BN's 27.

In the March 8 general election, Nasaruddin, who polled 6,556 votes, defeated PKR candidate Capt (Rtd) Usaili Alias with a 2,068-vote majority.

Perak: Umno state rep defects to PKR

Bota assemblyperson Nasarudin Hashim has quit Umno to join PKR, resulting in Pakatan Rakyat now controlling 32 state seats in Perak.

MCPX

nasarudin hashimWhen contacted, Perak Menteri Besar Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin told Bernama that Nasaruddin made an announcement that he was joining PKR at the party’s headquarters in Petaling Jaya.

With this development, the BN seats have been reduced to 27, (Umno 26 and MCA 1).

Nasaruddin, 58, is also a former chairperson of the Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Felcra).

He is the first Umno elected representative to defect to the opposition alliance.

'Beginning of a new wave'

Meanwhile, Nasaruddin in a press statement posted on PKR advisor Anwar Ibrahim's website, said he took the decision after considering the interests of his constituents.

In the general election held in March last year, Nasaruddin defeated PKR candidate Capt (Rtd) Usaili Alias by a majority of 2,068 votes.

There had been talk that Nasaruddin might quit Umno after he lost in the contest for the division head post of Parit Umno, two months ago.

He had been the deputy head of the division prior to the contest.

anwar ibrahimIn a related development, Anwar Isaid Nasaruddin’s decision is critical and reflected the sentiments of his voters, namely the Malays in his constituency.

He said this reflected the demand of the public and saw it "as the beginning of a new wave," when quizzed over the significance of the move.

Fairus dropped as Penang PKR deputy chief

In a startling development, Penang Deputy Chief Minister (I) Mohd Fairus Khairuddin has been dropped as the state PKR deputy chairperson following a reshuffle last night.

MCPX

mohammad fairus penang deputy cm deny resign 160708 01The decision by the party's state liaison committee has added fuel to the already raging speculation that the 32-year-old politician could be on his way out.

Also dropped was another deputy chairperson, Bukit Tambun state assemblyperson Law Choo Kiang.

Mohd Fairus has been replaced by Dr Mansor Othman while Law's position fell to Machang Bubuk state assemblyperson Tan Hock Leong.

However, the deputy chief minister remains as an ordinary state PKR liaison committee member.

Meanwhile, Zahrain Mohamed Hashim and S Raveentharan retained their positions as PKR state chief and deputy chairperson respectively.

As for the state PKR Youth chief post, it was filled by Balik Pulau MP Mohd Yusmadi Mohd Yusoff.

In an earlier reshuffle after the Permatang Pauh by-election on Aug 26 last year, another state executive councillor Abdul Malik Kassim was dropped as the state liaison committee secretary.

He was replaced by PKR's state election director Mustafa Kamal Mohd Yusoff.

Performance being monitored

State chief Zahrain was reported in Bernama as saying that Mohammad Fairus, Law and Abdul Malik were dropped to enable them to concentrate on their duties in the state administration.

He also added that a special committee headed by Mansor had been set up to monitor the performance of PKR executive councillors, assembly members, members of parliament and council members.

"Those who perform badly will be dropped from the line-up in the coming term," he said.

He also stressed that the move to drop the three had nothing to do with performance but rather, to enable them to concentrate on the state administration.

Talking to Malaysiakini later, Zahrain said the reshuffle was part of the party strategy to strengthen its operations and separate the state PKR leadership from the Pakatan Rakyat state government.

"We just reshuffled to separate party leadership from that of the state government.

"By separating the powers, the state leadership can fully concentrate on party matters while the government leaders can focus solely on state administrative matters.

"This will enhance our state party operations and improve performance of our government leaders," he said.

Asking for a bigger role

Zahrain was also reported by Bernama as saying that PKR should be given bigger roles in the state administration and agencies.

He called on the state government to increase PKR representations in statutory bodies and in government-owned as well as government-linked companies.

He expressed dissatisfaction over several of the state government's decisions which, he said, were made without consulting the party.

As an example he cited the appointment of former Gerakan leader Lee Kah Choon as investPenang executive chairperson.

He however said that relations with DAP and Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng remained good.

"We enjoy excellent relations but as a party, we do need to state our requests. This is normal," he said.
